Over the past few weeks I’ve done some soul-searching about Sassy Survivors and its future. It’s hard to know where to start.. I guess the beginning would make sense though! In October 2008 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 33. During treatment, I discovered support networks for young women affected by the disease were few and far between. So I decided to create one, and Sassy Survivors was born. I’m so proud that since then we’ve helped hundreds of women who, like me, were diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age. Monthly catchups filled with love and laughter turned a light on a dark time for many of us. As time went on, and women returned to living their lives to the fullest, the Sassy network became smaller. And that’s a wonderful thing!Inspired by the late Zoe Heron (the sassiest of them all), in 2016 I set about revitalising Sassy Survivors by taking our unique style of support online in the form of a website. In August 2017, we launched sassysurvivors.org.au and since then have sent our support packs to dozens of young women. But it’s come at a price. There are so many breast cancer charities in Australia, all competing for people’s hard-earned dollars, and it takes time and energy to sustain our operation. Time and energy I just don’t have anymore. 2017 has been incredibly challenging… emotionally, physically and mentally. Working full-time in a job I love, raising a family I couldn’t be more proud of, and putting my heart and soul into Sassy Survivors has taken it’s toll. I’ve visualised sitting across from myself and saying what I would, and have, said to the many women who have come through Sassy’s ‘doors’ - It’s time to look after you. Weirdly, it’s much easier to say those words than it is to hear them. But the time has come for me to listen. This isn’t so much goodbye to Sassy Survivors, but rather see you later. After all, as long as there are fabulous women overcoming adversity in their lives there will always be Sassy Survivors… just not as it exists now.
Huge thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. We couldn’t have done what we do for as long as we have without it! Deb 💕

'Back in June the crew from Sassy Survivors HQ came together to pack a new batch of our Sassy Survival Kits, which we've been sending young women affected by breast cancer since our inception in 2010. We packed 50, thinking that would last us at least a year. We were wrong. This is the last of those Sassy Kits, mailed out today. 50 kits since we launched our new website in late August. That might not sound like many, but for a small charity like ours it's a lot! 2017 has been a big year for Sassy Survivors, full of highs and lows, but we can look back and know we've brightened the cancer experience for all of these women. Now I need to take some time to reflect on what we've done and what we plan to do. Over December I'll be taking a break from Sassy's to do some soul searching and decide what's next in 2018. In the meantime, if you or a loved one needs assistance please contact the Cancer Council on 13 11 20. Wishing all our supporters and survivors a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Year's. Love, Deb 😘'
